PFLAG San Gabriel Valley API
PFLAG San Gabriel Valley API is a nonprofit organization that provides culturally responsive support, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ Asian Pacific Islander individuals, their families, and allies in the San Gabriel Valley. It fosters inclusive community through support groups, outreach, and programs that encourage intergenerational dialogue, understanding, and acceptance.

Operated by the LGBT National Help Center, this hotline offers peer-support to callers who are often very isolated, sometimes still closeted, and in need of a caring, non-judgmental person to talk with.

Aging Issues of LGBTQ Adults
Historically, LGBT people often had to leave their families of origin due to the prejudice and stigma they encountered at home. Over time, they formed “families of choice” that replaced their lost families of birth. Then, in the 80s, the decimation of the HIV/AIDS crisis fractured these created families and left many isolated. The few survivors were left deep in mourning at the loss of so many of their friends and loved ones, and reluctant to create new social bonds. Pasadena Village Board member Shad Cruz looks at how the lasting trauma of HIV/AIDS creates challenges and opportunities for Villages to reach out to aging LGBT people.

Pasadena Village is, and always has been, an inclusive environment. One popular member-led Village event is the monthly The Village People gathering where LGBTQ+ Villagers share lunch and mutual support. Villagers invite LGBTQ+ and allies to participate in forging new ways to live older and wiser with pride, not prejudice.
