Aging in SGV
The perception of aging in this area may have been influenced by our reputation on the world stage as the home of the Rose Parade and Game, or our proximity to the youthfulness permeated by Hollywood, or by the release of the song “Little ol’ Lady from Pasadena.”
How has the experience of being older changed since it was released in the 1960s? And maybe more importantly, how have our perceptions as a community changed about older adults over the years?
Life Expectancy
At the time of our country’s birth in the 1770s, the average life expectancy was around 36 years. Today, local residents have a life expectancy of 82 years, which is higher than other California residents (80) and those in the rest of the country (79).
Generations
Baby Boomers, named because of the spike in birth rates after World War II. The “Silent Generation,” also known as “Traditionalists,” are so named because children of this era were expected to be seen and not heard. The GI or Greatest Generation, is named after the 1998 book by Tom Brokaw.
Preparedness
It’s never too early to make a plan for taking care of yourself and those you love and prepare for the challenges we all may face as we age.
Communicate with your family and those close to you about your preferences for your health and living situation and be realistic about what you can afford and how much help you may need.
Volunteer, donate, and spread the word about the organizations and resources, like Pasadena Village, that serve older adults in our community.
